Upper Eyelid Lift
Conveniently located to serve the areas of Baltimore, Columbia, Ellicott City and Maryland
An upper eyelid lift, or upper blepharoplasty, is a facial rejuvenation procedure that restores the natural appearance of your eyes by removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids. (1)
As we age, a variety of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors can affect our appearance. Because of its thinness, the region around our eyes and eyelids is one of the first areas of the face to show early signs of aging, such as sagging, bags, and wrinkles. (2) This can cause you to look more tired or older than you feel.
Dr. Daniel Markmann is a board-certified plastic surgeon at Metamorphosis Plastic Surgery. He has helped countless patients transform the appearance of their eyes and has established a strong reputation for providing seamless, natural-looking results.

About Upper Eyelid Lifts
Upper eyelid lifts can restore a more refreshed and rejuvenated appearance by eliminating excess skin and tissue from around your upper eyelids. This procedure can address both functional and cosmetic concerns, many of which are caused by the natural aging process. These typically include sagging or drooping eyelid skin, skin irritation, a loss of eyelid definition, and interference with your peripheral vision. With an upper eyelid lift, you can address each of these concerns and more, all while preserving the natural appearance and shape of your eyes.
Benefits
There are several benefits that you can experience when undergoing an upper eyelid lift, including:
- Smoother-Feeling Skin: Addressing excess skin and fat can restore a flatter, smoother, and tighter look and feel to your eyelids.
- Improved Symmetry: An upper eyelid lift can address any unevenness between the eyes, allowing you to restore a more balanced and proportionate look.
- Reduced Hooding: Dr. Markmann can perform an upper eyelid lift to eliminate excess tissue from above the eyes to restore a more defined appearance.
- Lasting Results: The results of your upper eyelid lift can last for many years to come, especially with healthy lifestyle habits and an effective skincare regimen.
- Alleviated Discomfort: An upper eyelid lift can address any irritation caused by chafing skin or downward-facing eyelashes. (1)
- Tailored Solutions: Dr. Markmann designs each treatment plan around your specific concerns and goals to ensure results that align with your expectations.
- Elevated Self-Esteem: Addressing your appearance challenges, especially more prominent ones, may improve how you feel about yourself.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for an upper eyelid lift if you have developed sagging, wrinkled, or puffy upper eyelid skin and you wish to address it. You may also benefit from this procedure if your eyelid skin is limiting your peripheral vision.
To qualify, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding the results of your procedure. You should also be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine for an extensive period. Dr. Markmann will determine your candidacy during your consultation, once he has met with you in person.
Personal Consultation

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your upper eyelid lift, you will need to make certain preparations to ensure you are ready for your procedure. To help, Dr. Markmann will provide you with a set of comprehensive instructions. He may direct you to:
- Manage Your Medications: Avoid taking any medications or supplements that may thin your blood.
- Arrange Time Away: You will need to prepare to take time away from your career and social commitments after your procedure to focus on resting.
- Prepare Transportation Home: You should arrange a ride back from your procedure with a trusted friend or family member. Dr. Markmann will use either local or general anesthesia when performing your eyelid lift. You may not feel well enough to drive home afterwards, and certain dressings may obstruct your vision.
- Fill Your Prescriptions: Pick up any medications you may need for your recovery beforehand. This ensures you have them ready for when Dr. Markmann releases you home.
- Stop Smoking: Stop using nicotine in the weeks before your procedure.
- Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from consuming any alcohol in the days before and after your appointment.
Procedure
Dr. Markmann performs each upper eyelid lift either in his office or in the surgical center. The exact duration of your procedure will vary, but you can expect it to last between one and two hours. Dr. Markmann will either perform this procedure using local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of your corrections.
Dr. Markmann will place an incision along the upper eyelid, within your natural creases, to access the necessary tissues while minimizing any post-operative scarring. Through this incision, he will begin making each of your corrections. He may excise excess skin to address any sagging or remove deposits of fat to restore smoother-looking and feeling eyelids.
Once he has performed each of your desired corrections, he will carefully close each incision using sutures. He will then allow you to rest under the care of his team until you are ready to return home!
Recovery
Dr. Markmann performs upper eyelid lifts on an outpatient basis, which means that his team will release you home on the same day as your procedure. You may experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness around your eyelids as you heal.
You may return to your routine after resting for approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to refrain from any strenuous or physically demanding activities until Dr. Markmann clears you to return. He will also ask you to return for several follow-up appointments to ensure your results are developing as expected.
Dr. Markmann will provide you with a full set of postoperative instructions to help you care for yourself as you heal. By following each given instruction, you can ensure a smoother recovery and the best possible results.
Results
The results of your upper eyelid lift become more apparent as any residual swelling subsides. Your eyes will appear brighter, more open, and alert in a way that restores a well-rested and refreshed look, rather than an altered one. Your eyelids will also look and feel smoother and tighter, improving the overall aesthetic appearance of your eyes.
The results of an upper eyelid lift can last for many years, but it is important to understand that the natural aging process will continue to affect your appearance over time.
