Labiaplasty, also called labia minora reduction, is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and protrusion of the inner vaginal lips when they are excessive. This procedure is often sought to alleviate physical discomfort or self-consciousness caused by elongated, discolored, or asymmetrical labia, as well as to enhance the overall appearance of the intimate area. As more women take control of their health and wellness, labiaplasty has grown increasingly popular. (1)

About Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that can be performed to improve the appearance and function of the labia minora, also known as the inner vaginal lips. Many women are born with naturally enlarged or discolored labia, which can often lead to discomfort, tugging, or twisting. Other women choose this procedure to restore the appearance of their genitalia after changes caused by pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations, or aging. In many cases, part of the reason the labia minora look longer with aging is because of the loss of volume of the Labia Majora. Therefore, Dr Markmann often combines Fat Grafting to the Labia Majora and reduction of the Labia Minora. (2) Regardless of your reasoning, Dr. Markmann can employ a variety of different techniques to help you achieve each of your goals, allowing you to live more comfortably and confidently.

Preparation

You will receive important preoperative instructions from Dr. Markmann. These instructions are tailored to your individual procedure plan, medical history, and desired goals. Following each of these instructions will prepare you thoroughly for your labiaplasty.

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
  • Stop using nicotine several weeks in advance.
  • Avoid alcohol before the procedure.
  • Plan time away from work and other social commitments.
  • Prearrange transportation to and from the procedure.
  • Arrange for at-home care and assistance during recovery.

Procedure

Patients usually only require local anesthesia for labiaplasty, although general anesthesia may be used for significant corrections or if the procedure is combined with others. Dr. Markmann can perform labiaplasty using one of three different techniques: the trim technique, the wedge technique, and the window technique.

Trim Technique

When performing a trim labiaplasty, Dr. Markmann will remove excess tissue from the edge of the labia minora to reduce its size and protrusion. This technique is often performed on patients seeking to address discoloration or darkened skin, but it may also leave scar tissue along the edges of the labia. (2)

Wedge Technique

A wedge labiaplasty consists of removing a V-shaped wedge of tissue from the center of the labia. Once removed, the edges are sutured together to reduce the size of the labia minora. This method preserves the natural edges of the labia and is often praised for its discreet scar placement, and it is well-suited if you have triangular-shaped labia or elongated labia that extend well beyond the edges of the labia majora (outer vaginal lips).

Window Technique

Dr. Markmann can perform the window technique by creating a rectangular or elliptical “window” from the center of the labia minora. The upper and lower edges of the window are then sutured together to connect the front and back parts of the labia minora, reducing its overall length while preserving the edges near the clitoral hood and perineum. This technique is more specialized, often being performed on those with more protrusion or thickness in the center of their labia.

Recovery

After the completion of your labiaplasty, you will be released home to continue recovering. Most patients experience swelling or bruising in the treated area, but these effects will gradually fade. Most patients can return to work within a couple of days, depending on the nature of their jobs; however, it is vital to refrain from engaging in physical activities, tampon use, douching, and vaginal intercourse for at least six weeks. Throughout your recovery, you may be asked to attend follow-up appointments so that Dr. Markmann can monitor your progress. Any additional recovery instructions will be discussed and provided during your consultation.

Results

consultation labiaplasty

As you continue to heal from your procedure, the full results of your labiaplasty will become more noticeable. You will be able to enjoy a significant improvement in your daily comfort, as well as a reduction in the protrusion and size of your labia. Many women also feel more confident when wearing more form-fitting or revealing clothing. When performed by a qualified surgeon, labiaplasty is a highly effective procedure that offers natural-looking results with satisfaction rates exceeding 90%. (2)

Corresponding Procedures

Dr. Markmann can easily combine a labiaplasty with other procedures to deliver a full-body transformation, achieving each of your goals within one surgical session. One of the most common additions to labiaplasty is a clitoral hood reduction.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

A clitoral hood reduction is often performed alongside labiaplasty to reduce the amount of skin covering the clitoris. Many women seek this procedure to enhance their sensation and intimate lives by increasing the amount of clitoral exposure, while others may receive this procedure to enhance their genital appearance. Dr. Markmann is highly experienced in this field and can perform this procedure to enhance your sensitivity and appearance.
