About Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a procedure focusing on enhancing the shape, fullness, position, and symmetry of the breasts, either with the aid of implants or the transfer of fat. Patients from all different backgrounds seek breast augmentation to improve their confidence and self-esteem. It is especially beneficial after significant weight loss or breastfeeding, which can naturally decrease the volume and alter the appearance of the breasts. Fortunately, the customizable nature of breast augmentation allows patients to choose from a variety of materials, sizes, shapes, and placements suitable for all preferences and body types.

Silicone Implants

Silicone breast implants are highly popular for use in breast augmentation due to their natural feel. Made of cohesive silicone gel, these implants closely mimic natural breast tissue in weight, movement, and density. Silicone implants are also the material most likely to retain their shape, volume, and positioning over time. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and profiles, catering to a range of preferences.

Silicone implants blend seamlessly with the natural breast tissue. (2) Even if the outer shell ruptures, the cohesive gel typically maintains its shape and stays in the breast pocket. Patients who want to achieve a natural, aesthetically elegant outcome can see transformative, highly satisfying results with silicone implants.

Saline Implants

Saline implants consist of a silicone shell that Dr. Markmann fills with sterile saline solution during surgery. These implants are firmer and slightly less expensive than silicone implants, and they may require smaller surgical incisions since size adjustments can be made after placement. One of the most appealing aspects of saline implants is their adjustability–Dr. Markmann can achieve precise symmetry and the desired volume and projection during the procedure.

Saline implants provide a more structured profile than silicone, and they may be the preferred option for women with firmer existing breast tissue to help support the shape of the implants. During your consultation, Dr. Markmann will explain how saline implants work and if they are ideal for your body’s needs and goals.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer augmentation lends a more subtle size and shape enhancement on its own and, in combination with silicone or saline implants, it works beautifully to enhance natural chest volume and contour. By using liposuction to transfer fat from either the abdomen, flanks, or buttocks, fat transfer breast augmentation also carries a dual benefit for patients seeking a more comprehensive aesthetic transformation. Dr. Markmann can help you make an informed decision if you wish to explore fat transfer either as an alternative to implants or as an additional enhancement.

Dr. Markmann’s patients experience a renewed sense of positivity as the mental and emotional benefits of a breast augmentation can be just as impactful as the physical enhancements.

Candidates

Potential candidates for breast augmentation are women who wish to increase their breast volume, address symmetry, or reshape the area for a more youthful appearance. Candidates should be in overall good health and hold realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. Individuals should also be non-smokers or prepared to abstain from nicotine use.

Preparation

Once you have booked your procedure, Dr. Markmann and his team will provide you with detailed pre-surgery instructions. You will likely need to abstain from nicotine and alcohol use, avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements, plan time off from work and strenuous activities for recovery, and more. Dr. Markmann will provide any other preparations that may be specific to your case. He also recommends that you fill all medication prescriptions for post-surgery care ahead of time.

Procedure

Once you arrive for your procedure, check in and change, we will place you under anesthesia to ensure that you stay pain-free and asleep while Dr. Markmann performs your breast augmentation. Having already decided on implant type, size, and placement at your consultation and preliminary planning, Dr. Markmann will create a small incision, usually in the inframammary fold, and place the implant either above or below the pectoral muscle. The placement will depend on your own preference in addition to Dr. Markmann’s recommendation. Submuscular placement is typically superior for its advantage of holding the implant more securely in place at a deeper position, but subglandular placement may offer a quicker recovery time.

For fat transfer augmentation, he utilizes liposuction to collect fat, refine it, and then inject it carefully into the breasts to achieve the desired proportions.

After completing your augmentation, Dr. Markmann will close your incisions with careful techniques to minimize scarring. He or a member of his team will wrap your chest in surgical dressings, and you will spend an hour on-site in a recovery area where Dr. Markmann and his team can ensure your safety and comfort as you come out of anesthesia.

Recovery

Breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery, so you will be able to return home the same day as your procedure. Take care to rest on your back and keep your upper body elevated. It is important to get out of bed early and often (with assistance) after surgery, as gentle movement will increase blood flow and help prevent clots. You will be able to shower 48 hours after surgery, but you must refrain from fully submerging yourself in water for a couple of weeks as you heal. Moderate discomfort may persist for a couple of weeks, but you can manage this with prescribed medication.

Keep all of your follow-up appointments with Dr. Markmann, so he and his team can evaluate your healing progress, examine your incisions, and address any questions and concerns you may have.

Results

As swelling and bruising gradually decrease and your implants or fat transfer settle into place, the final results will appear progressively, and your body will soften into its enhanced shape. You will experience a more pleasing profile, a shapelier bust, and a new self-confidence as you start to enjoy your breast augmentation’s long-lasting benefits.

Corresponding Procedures

If you wish to address other aesthetic goals with Dr. Markmann, he and his team at Metamorphosis Plastic Surgery expertly perform a range of procedures that would complement your breast augmentation for a more comprehensive treatment plan.

Breast Lift

Breast augmentation will not correct or prevent breasts from sagging. A breast lift is effective as a stand-alone or corresponding procedure that surgically lifts sagging breast tissue and repositions the nipple for an elevated, more youthful appearance. As a combined procedure, breast augmentation and lift is quite popular and extraordinarily effective.

Liposuction

Liposuction targets and removes persistent fat in the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and buttocks. Whether or not it is implemented to supply donor tissue for a fat transfer breast augmentation, liposuction will further balance body proportions and contours.

Cost of Breast Augmentation in Baltimore

The total cost of your breast augmentation will depend on a few factors, including the implants you select, the surgical techniques Dr. Markmann employs, any corresponding procedures, and more. During your consultation, he will develop a concise treatment plan and deliver a personalized estimate of your total treatment costs. Financing options are available to make treatment more accessible.
