Tummy Tuck Information

Individuals who have a problem getting rid of excess fat and stretched-out skin in the mid and/or lower abdominal region, even while adhering to a healthy diet and frequent exercising, may want to consider a tummy tuck procedure. Depending on the severity of excess skin and amount of fat, Dr. Markmann will perform either a full tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck. The mini tummy tuck is an abbreviated version of the full tummy tuck, which is meant to target the skin in the lower abdominal region (below the belly button). A full tummy tuck will address all of the skin and fat up to the rib cage, down to the pubic hair line.

Typically, a good full tummy tuck candidate requires some laxity of the skin of the upper abdomen, which is pulled down toward the pubic hair line; the excess skin is removed, and sewn back together. Not only does abdominoplasty remove excess skin and fat, it also entails tightening of the abdominal muscles, which are commonly stretched after pregnancy or massive weight loss.

Women who only have an issue of excess fat of the abdomen, with good skin tone, may be better candidates for liposuction ("lipoplasty"). In addition, liposuction and tummy tuck surgery may be performed together to achieve a more dramatic improvement to the midsection. Dr. Markmann may also recommend liposuction of the hips and thighs to complement your abdominoplasty results.
